The municipality of Bahía Blanca, led by Federico Susbielles, has launched an "extraordinary plan for hydraulic reconstruction". The goal is to increase the water runoff capacity and reduce the risk of flooding, such as the one recorded on March 7th last year.
According to the Argentine News Agency (NA), the program foresees an estimated investment of 27 billion pesos to be executed over the next two years. It includes major interventions such as the rainwater drainage on Laínez Street, which will benefit the Oasis and Taxistas neighborhoods, as well as other works in Cenci, Los Olivos, Villa Belgrano, Nueva Belgrano, Molina Campos, and Villa Mitre.
The package is complemented by the reconstruction of about 250 drains financed by the province, with a completion deadline in 2027.
The funding comes from a public-private agreement with companies from the petrochemical hub and grain firms, which will make an extraordinary contribution prorated between 2026 and 2027, after a sharper increase in the industrial activity tax rate was discarded.
The Executive branch maintains that this is an "unprecedented" scheme for cooperation to carry out structural works without access to international financing or specific support from the national government.
As part of this plan, which is estimated at 12.5 billion pesos for the coming year, an additional annual contribution of 3 billion pesos from grain companies is also expected. These funds will be allocated to 13 drainage works in highly vulnerable neighborhoods such as Ingeniero White, General Daniel Cerri, Villa Harding Green, and low-lying areas of the urban center.
